Black bear hunting: planning your bait site

Black bear hunting requires a great deal of patience, proper baiting techniques and bear hunting products to ensure the best chance of success. In this article, you will learn how to build a black bear feeding site.

Different techniques exist for baiting a bear site. Sylvain Ste-Marie, President of ProXpédition, uses a technique that has been taught to him by outfitters here in Quebec with a success rate of over 90%.

To perform this baiting technique, you will need:

One of our 3 bear hunting bait product kits

1 x Bearfume long-distance lure

1 x Bloodtrail long-distance lure

1 x Red Velvet Coulis

1 x Bear Mix Sexual Lure

2 x Bear Feed

(Approximate value of $125)

Find a place near water

The first step to start your baiting is to choose a spot along a stream, near a lake or by a swamp. There should always be water near your baiting site, as these are the areas where bears prefer to drink.

Once you have chosen your site, you will need a barrel with about 15 holes the size of a quarter. Tie the barrel to a tree with a steel cable about 20 feet long. Pour 40 kg of ProXpedition bear feed inside. Add Red Velvet (sweet cake flavour). Bears are known to be omnivores and will literally eat anything! The intense scent of this sweet surprise is sure to capture the mammal's attention.

Attract bears with long-distance lures

Next, spread the entire content of a Bloodtrail long-distance lure bottle (oil-based) on the ground. This way, every animal visiting your baited site will leave their scent all over the forest, bringing more game to your site and eventually attracting a black bear.

Since bears are very territorial, use the bear sexual lure to perform a ground scrape. The purpose of this technique is to reproduce the presence of a female in heat and a male in rut in the desired area. The objective is to break the bears' nightly routine and have them come in at any time of day to identify intruders in the area.

Finally, before you leave your site, spray your barrel with our Bearfume product which perfectly replicates the smell of rotting meat over very long distances. Please note, however, that the smell is so strong, you could get sick if you apply it at the beginning of your baiting. It is therefore essential to spread the product only at the very end of the operation.
